Celebrations at Cullompton Baptist Church

In October 2007 Gladys Davies became the first member of Cullompton Baptist church to reach the amazing landmark of 60 years a member. Gladys joined the church as a child and was baptized in October 1947. She went on to become a Sunday school teacher for some time and is now a deacon. Members and friends joined her to celebrate the great achievement where she was given flowers and a card made by the children. She said she loved the church and joining it was the best thing she had ever done.

New Beginnings

A flower festival, New Beginnings was held at the church on Friday November 2nd and Saturday November 3rd. There were many beautiful flower arrangements illustrating new beginnings both in the bible and in life too. The church looked very beautiful for this event which was to celebrate the redecoration of the chapel and also the beginning of a new ministry. Displays included Noah's Ark, birth, marriage, death and many others.

New Minister’s Induction

At 4pm on Saturday 3rd November the church was filled to the rafters to celebrate the induction of the new minister Revd. Colin Wood. A coach full of people came from Calne Baptist Church to wish him farewell from their church and pass on good wishes for his future in Cullompton. Members and friends of the church and local dignitaries also came to welcome him and celebrate his induction there.
Following the retirement of the last minister Revd David Evans, Revd Peter Eastwood, the moderator who had assisted the church in their quest to find a new minister, opened the ceremony and welcomed everyone.
Revd Jez Brown, Senior Regional Minister of the South West Baptist Association conducted the induction ceremony and read out cards of good wishes from those unable to attend. Mrs Joan Jenkins, Church secretary, and Colin himself, gave statements telling the story of the search and final outcome and a sermon was given by Revd. Dr Alan Westwood.
Finally messages of hope for Colin, Rosie his wife, and the community of Cullompton were given by visiting dignitaries and following the ceremony Colin and Rosie thanked everyone for sharing this special day with them and invited them all to join them for refreshments in the schoolroom.

Norman Lindsell

On Sunday 4th November the new minister Revd. Colin Wood took his first service for the Baptist congregation in Cullompton at which the life of Norman Lindsell was celebrated. Norman was well known and loved in the town having worked as a manager at one of the local mills prior to his retirement. For quite some time he held down both the treasurer and secretary post at the church and then continued for many years as treasurer. It was his great wish to see the chapel at the church redecorated and following his death “Norman’s fund” was opened to do just that. Monies were raised through various social events until finally there was enough to redecorate the chapel and fulfil Norman’s wish. Many people, friends and family, gathered at the church to commemorate the life of Norman Lindsell.
